The Tasmanian Poetry Festival travels to Hobart to Hadley's Orient Hotel in the glorious Atrium.
Presenting a staged play reading about renowned Tasmanian poet - Gwen Harwood and her struggle to get published as a woman writer in the 1950's. Dismissed by male editors as just a Hobart housewife.
Written by acclaimed playwright, Stella Kent and directed by Peter Hammond, it is a very moving and poignant portrayal of a woman ahead of her time, trapped by marriage and motherhood whilst determined to make her mark in the male dominated publishing world. It is interwoven with the Orr scandal that rocked the university at the time.
We celebrate Gwen - the devoted mother and wife that she was - with a sumptuous afternoon tea included in the ticket price. The play celebrates her life and definitely shows us that Gwen was so much more than just a Hobart housewife!
